Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Research has shown that Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) works well with couples. I have been using this technique for the past few years and have found it to be very effective in helping couples regain their closeness. It helps partners learn to reach out to each other more effectively, increasing openness, empathy trust and connection.
The purpose of using emotionally focused therapy when handling relationship problems is to:
- De-escalate negative cycles of interaction
- Identify negative feedback loop patterns
- Access unacknowledged emotions
- Learn that negative cycles of interaction are the problem instead of “my partner is the problem” or “I’m the problem”
- Change interactional patterns and create new bonding
- Learn to re-create positive feedback loops
I have helped couples with:
- Communication problems
- Infidelity
- Trust issues
- Constant arguing
- Abusive behavior
- Relationship transitions
- Relationship dissolution
- Emotional distance
